BEAM: Interactive lighting for the Mapiq meeting room
Connected lamps that tell you when your meeting is over. Build instructions here!
The challenge
When Mapiq moved offices, we went from small to big… but also cluttered to really empty. I was given the task of coming up with an interesting lighting piece for our brand new meeting room. Of course, internet connectivity was required so that we could signal beginnings and endings of meetings, but also a disco-mode was among the requirements.
The process
concept generation, Iterative design cycles involving prototyping, coding.
The team
Creating BEAM was a solo project. Main stakeholder in the project were founders of the company Sander Schutte and Jasper Schuurmans.
The result
Two full size objects were built. Each lamp consists of two 3D-printed armatures with integrated set-screws that hold a 1 meter ghost acrylic rod in place. This acrylic rod is filled with reflective nano-particles that disperse light. LED rings in both armatures create light patterns that radiate through the rods. A central console houses the electronics that control the LEDs and which connects to WiFi. The objects were suspended from a dropped ceiling in the office.
