Mapiq sensor V4: Elevate your office experience
Improved quality and aesthetics for high volume production. Check it out!
The challenge
Mapiq is a smart-office solution that enables flexible use of your workspace, offering employees a frictionless workday.
From 2018 to 2020, I worked on a fourth iteration of Mapiq’s connected desk-occupancy sensor that uses innovative, highly accurate capacitive sensing technology to detect users sitting behind or standing at a desk.
The fourth redesign of this product aimed to increase aesthetics, build quality and to make it fit for true mass production of the device among others.
The process
Ideation, concept generation, CAD work, iterative design cycles, multiple prototyping steps, DFA, design detailing, PCB redesign, material selection, briefing of manufacturer, compliance and certification
The team
I was the project lead for the entirety of the project supported by Arjan van der Vleuten. Collaborations with SOWNet and Studio KEES were an integral part of the development process. Teammate Hong van Leeuwen supported in operationalizing the product.
The result
We designed a 4 part polycarbonate enclosure that could be molded in two “family molds”. A removable mounting plate was added to the top of the enclosure for easy mounting/dismounting. The LED light effect was drastically improved by making a lightguide out of a frosted Lexan material. A rubber button improved the feel of the manual interaction significantly.
Currently this product is in production and over 5000 have been sold.
