Corona beacon: Social distancing made easy

Designing a Bluetooth powered wearable for construction workers at VORM.

The challenge

In March of 2020 VORM reached out to Mapiq to develop a small wearable device that alerts the user (specifically construction workers working on a construction site) when they are standing too close to colleagues and are not keeping a safe distance of 1.5m as advised by the Dutch institute for public health and the environment during COVID-19 times.

The Process

The concept was conceived as a result of high-speed design sprint done as a collaboration between Mapiq and VORM. Contextual research was done, then several generative sessions with experts. This resulted in two low-detail concepts, of which one was chosen and iterated upon. The device was prototyped and tested in a real life scenario.

The team

I was the project lead for the entirety of the project supported by Arjan van der Vleuten. Main stakeholder from VORM was Norbert Schotte.

The Result

The Corona beacon alerts the user using auditory and visual warning signals one it registers another beacon in it’s proximity using bluetooth technology. The device is specifically designed to be produced in low volumes using off-the-shelf components and using rapid prototyping.
